CIMIC Group mining services provider Thiess has secured $440 million worth of work at BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s
Caval Ridge and Peak Downs coal mines in the Bowen Basin.

Over three years, Thiess will deliver mining services for specific components of work including the services required for Caval Ridge Southern Circuit (CRSC).

“We’re extremely proud to be partnering with BMA, building on our longstanding history in central Queensland,” Thiess managing director Douglas Thompson said.

“This contract will enable Thiess to deliver productivity efficiencies, working with BMA to bring additional job opportunities to the region.”

Thiess said its work at Caval Ridge would start by the end of the year.

BMA is investing about $270 million in an 11km overland conveyor system to transport coal from Peak Downs Mine to the Coal Handling Preparation Plant (CHPP) at Caval Ridge.

The Caval Ridge Southern Circuit capital growth project, near Moranbah in the Bowen Basin, is expected to create up to 400 new construction jobs and lock in about 200 ongoing operational roles.

It will also result in the Caval Ridge preparation plant increasing its throughput to reach its 10 million-tonne-per-year capacity.
