Pipe tender to be decided April 24
A recommendation on the preferred supplier is expected to go the full council meeting on April 24 for a decision.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the pipe tender was the biggest component of the pipeline and it was crucial to get the deal right.
“This little extra time to negotiate allows council to guarantee that we get the right technology for the best price, while trying to maximise the number of local jobs created,” Cr Hill said.
“The pipeline will be a city-changing project and the benefits will be felt in Townsville for decades to come.
“More jobs will flow from the pipeline as the project ramps up over coming months.”
The pipeline is an essential part of the council’s three-point plan for Water Security, which also includes a recycled water system along with a Community Water Transition Support Package.
Cr Hill said the awarding of the pipe tender on April 24, would still see the pipeline built by the end of next year – within 26 months from start to finish.
