Pieces falling into place for Hay Point shutdown works
A component for the overhaul of Ship Loader 2, an outer shuttle weighing about 150 tonnes, was shifted from Paget to the Mackay Harbour at the weekend ready for transport by heavy lift ship to Hay Point.
BMA said Monadelphous was principal contractor for the shutdown work, which also involves MI Scaffold, Tincone, Walz and Biglift.
Peak workforce will be about 450, including boilermakers, riggers, fitters, trade assistants, painters, scaffolders, and electricians.
The planned work, from August 16, includes the replacement of the Ship Loader 2 outer shuttle with a new shuttle supplied by Melco.
The existing inner shuttle is being removed by heavy lift vessel, transported to Mackay Harbour and unloaded.
Repair works will take place at the harbour over four or five weeks before it is loaded back on to the heavy lift vessel and re-installed at Hay Point.
The overhaul includes Ship Loader 2 general repairs including walkways and main frame, shiploader tripper rail repairs and Berth 2 general repair works.
