NSS excels with Townsville zinc load rate
NSS achieved its highest load rate of MMG Dugald River zinc concentrates this month after making innovative changes to the loading operation.
About 11,000 metric tonnes of zinc concentrate was loaded in 20 hours, equating to an average of 20 containers, weighing almost 27 tonnes each, being tipped into the vessel every hour.
“This result is the culmination of very good planning by my operations team and execution by the team delivering the service on the wharf,” NSS general manager David King said.
“These results don’t just happen, they take consistent planning, execution and review looking for any opportunity to continue to improve.
“NSS has operated at Port of Townsville since 1971 and we specialise in anything from live cattle to containers and motor vehicles.
“Our staff work hard to provide customers with the most comprehensive and efficient stevedoring, warehousing and transport services in the region.”
MMG has invested in specially designed “half height” containers that have productivity, safety and environmental benefits.
The lower height means that they can be double stacked for transport back to the mine site to boost capacity if there are weather-related or other delays.
The Dugald River mine, located 65km north-west of Cloncurry, has been exporting via Townsville since late 2017 and is considered one of the world’s best zinc deposits.
