The roof is going on as a $37 million Central Queensland beef processing plant powers towards a mid-year opening.

The Signature Onfarm project, north of Moranbah, includes an abattoir covering about 6000sq m and capable of processing 200 head of cattle a day.

The Federal Government this week announced the financial close of a $24 million Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) loan for the project.

Minister for Resources, Water and Northern Australia Keith Pitt said the Signature Onfarm beef project was expected to create about 200 construction jobs and 70 ongoing jobs.

The project is being developed by Signature Beef, the family-owned business of Blair and Josie Angus.

Mrs Angus said the project was well-progressed as the family had already been investing funds before the NAIF loan kicked in.

“We have a considerable number of local trades involved,” she said.

“The roofers are from Airlie Beach, the electricians from Moranbah, concreters from Ayr and Townsville. The primary builders (Bryant) are a Cairns-based company. We have a lot of regional and local content included in the project.”

Site work kicked off in late 2019 with earthworks and construction of a workers’ accommodation village to house 55 people.

After a hiatus during part of 2020, the footings were set for the main building in October and the construction works ramped up.

“The majority of the structural steel work is now up and the roof is going on this week,” Mrs Angus said.

Brisbane-based G&B Stainless is manufacturing the equipment for the plant.

“It’s pretty awesome to go down there to Brisbane at the moment,” she said.

“They have two sheds, one dealing with black steel and the other with stainless, and you can walk into the sheds at the moment and they are just full of our equipment and their teams are just working flat out for this project.”

The finished facility will be a full export meat processing plant with slaughter and boning areas, storage and commercial dry ageing rooms.
