August start for $80m development
Prime will act as principal contractor for the project, which is expected to be completed by late 2022 or early 2023.
The company is already carrying out work to transform the former Grand Ballrooms and adjacent function rooms at The Ville into an exclusive private gaming area for the casino’s high end members.
Ville chief executive officer Michael Jones said the Morris Group expected 150 jobs to be created when the new hotel was operational.
He described the development as a major vote of confidence in the local economy.
“(The Morris Group) has obviously spent a considerable amount of money here at the existing property (The Ville) and – due to the demand we’ve seen through this property – are prepared to invest and build another 137 rooms, which is very exciting.” Mr Jones said
“I think its great for Townsville because the city is in need of more leisure accommodation and this will certainly address that need.”
In addition to the accommodation, the new building will feature a rooftop infinity pool and fine dining.
The building work will kick off with piling in August.
The Morris Group owns an extensive portfolio of hospitality ventures including Mt Mulligan Lodge, Orpheus Island Lodge, and Daintree Ecolodge in Far North Queensland along with Great Barrier Reef Cruising vessel Flying Fish.
