Adani marks Carmichael coal milestone
It includes this month’s awarding of a $350 million-plus civil construction contract to Queensland-based BMD.
The BMD work package is expected to generate 600 jobs and the company says the majority of the workforce will come from Rockhampton and Townsville.
Works to upgrade the mine site airstrip have been completed and flights between Townsville and the mine site began in late May. Rockhampton flights started this week.
Flights schedules are subject to change but are currently operating a number of times each week from both Rockhampton and Townsville,” an Adani spokeswoman said.
“This is another exciting milestone for our project and will also help to improve the safety of our staff and contractors, by significantly reducing their travel time at the start and end of their rosters.
“The flights will also mean fewer vehicles on local roads. We always said Rockhampton and Townsville would be the FIFO hubs for our project and we’re delivering on that commitment.”
Adani says more than 500 people are already working on the project’s construction sites.
“Workers have also moved into the first of our three temporary rail accommodation camps,” the spokeswoman said.
“The three temporary rail camps combined will provide an additional 1200 beds for the project workforce.
“We remain on track to create more than 1,500 direct jobs during the construction and ramp up of our project and some further 6,750 indirect jobs.”
