Adani is continuing major infrastructure upgrades at its Abbot Point Operations near Bowen, with a focus on controlling stormwater run-off.

A considerable number of work packages were either completed or currently underway to improve water and environmental management as part of a three-year upgrade program, an Abbot Point Operations spokeswoman said.

She said more than $15 million worth of projects had been delivered over the past two years.

This included increasing the volume of water storage ponds, upgrade of a bund wall, additional new piping and pump facilities, deepening and widening of drains, as well as an early works program to redesign remaining water management infrastructure at other release points.

“Further work on site to improve water storage management will be undertaken next year including engineering and design of an additional water storage pond, upgrades to all other release points, including upgrades to sumps, pumps, power supply and piping,” she said.

The  Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES) conducted its annual pre-wet weather inspection at the site this month.

Abbot Point Operations says the officers reported that they had not observed any matters of concern or evidence to indicate non-compliances with the environmental authority or the Environmental Protection Act 1994

The Abbot Point Operations spokeswoman said they had commended the business on the improvements implemnted since 2017.

The company was conscious that the Abbot Point coal terminal was located next to the man-made Caley Valley Wetlands, so flooding was a constant consideration during extreme weather events in the wet season, she said.

“However, the infrastructure upgrades that are already underway onsite will mean our Abbot Point terminal is the best position possible to manage wet weather,” the spokeswoman said.
